Find culture, adventure and magic in every nook and cranny

by Sandra Phinney

Vacations are about renewing our "capacity for wonder," once said Shana Alexander, famed American journalist. "It is not really rest or even leisure we chase," she said.
With that in mind, know that wonder will come easily as you journey through Nova Scotia, for it's a magical place, full of maritime mystique.

So take a deep breath, slow your mind and soak in the sights! Nova Scotians are hearty and hospitable, fun-loving and friendly. In this part of the world, you can be as adventuresome as you dare or as laid back as you please - either way, you'll discover a lifestyle that makes you feel renewed.

This is a place where roots run deep. The legacies of the Mi'kmaq First Nations, Scots, Acadians, Black Loyalists and New England Planters provide a rich backdrop of human interest. Cultural experiences abound.

If you're looking for peace and quiet, Nova Scotia has more than 6,600 lakes and many rivers flowing toward its 4,600 miles of coastline. Nature lovers, hikers, bikers, birders and paddlers are continually delighted by the sheer variety of opportunities - and by the pristine beaches, star-filled skies and magnificent sunsets.

Nova Scotia is also famous for its award-winning wines. The vineyards are "wow" destinations - some of Nova Scotia's hidden treasures. You'll also want to try the homegrown culinary delights: fresh seafood prepared more ways than you can count, followed by delicious local desserts.

If you fancy city life, Atlantic Canada's largest city - Halifax - is cosmopolitan, hip and loads of fun. The city hums with music, art, museums, theatre, festivals and great places to shop. You name it - you can find it! It's big city life wrapped up in small-town friendliness.

And Nova Scotians love to party! There are more than 1,000 festivals and special events - from Celtic musical extravaganzas and shark scrambles to candlelight graveyard tours.

There are more things to see and do in Nova Scotia than you can do in a lifetime of vacations. Wherever you stop, ask the locals what they're proudest of in their area - whether discovering a stunning coastline by kayak, exploring shops tucked into beautiful architecture or taking a walk on the wild side of a menu. Snoop around - you'll be rewarded in Nova Scotia.
