Maine includes Acadia, America’s second-most-visited national park; 3,500 miles of coast for sailing, surfing and sunbathing; and some of the most distinctive inns and restaurants in the world. The coast can be divided into three major sections, going south to north: the Southern Coast, the Mid-Coast and Down East.

Southern Coast

Maine’s most populated geographic area, the southern coast, begins and ends with shopping. From Kittery to Freeport, it includes miles of long sandy beaches, ice-cream huts, clam shacks, boardwalks, boat rides, galleries and lighthouses. It also includes Portland, Maine’s largest city. Learn More

Mid-Coast

Maine’s Mid-Coast, from Freeport to the Penobscot River, is composed of museums, quaint downtowns, fishing wharves, rocky coves, coastal islands, stunning state parks, scenic drives and delightful detours. Learn More

Down East and Acadia

Down East, from the Penobscot River to Calais, is the most remote section of the coast, with the exception of Bar Harbor, where the pace picks up with museums, cruises, a lively social scene and miles of drives and hikes through Acadia National Park. Learn More
